"Mystic River" question

Would someone tell me please what made Brendan Harris believe that his brother "Silent" Ray was not mute once Brendan discovered that Ray (and his friend, John) killed Brendan's girlfriend Katie Markum?

I didn't read the book. I wondered if the tie-in got left on the cutting room floor. The copy of the DVD I have doesn't include any extras.

Can anyone answer this for me?

    I have watched the movie as well as read the book, and in my opinion, Brendan never showed any sign of knowing if his brother speaks or not. It was never revealed actually.
